We propose a different meeting this week, we will go to the Arts Center of the Ecole internationale to see the Photography Exhibition about Leila Alaoui. We will then have dinner nearby (place tbd depending on the number of people attending).
The Ecolint Arts Center is presenting an exhibition dedicated to Leila Alaoui, in tribute to her work, her journey, and her deeply humanistic perspective. This event is organized in close collaboration with the Alaoui Foundation, the CILA (Leila Alaoui Intercultural Centre), and Galleria Continua.
Having tragically passed away on January 18, 2016, in Ouagadougou at the age of 33, Leila Alaoui leaves behind a body of work of rare power. Ten years after her passing, this exhibition brings together an exceptional selection of her photographs: iconic series, lesser-seen works, and photographic collections that reveal the full richness and coherence of her artistic approach.
This project finds its meaning in the shared values between international Geneva and the International School of Geneva—openness to the world, respect for differences, and a commitment to peace—which resonate deeply with those championed by the artist throughout her career.
Through her work, Leila Alaoui explored essential and highly relevant themes: identity, migration, women's rights, and the conditions of migrant workers. Her work, which is both aesthetic and socially engaged, continues to challenge how we view the contemporary world.
Her approach is distinguished by a deeply humanistic vision. With rare sensitivity, she captures the dignity of the people she photographs and gives a voice to those who are seen far too rarely.
Her images build bridges between cultures, revealing the invisible connections between identities, histories, and territories. They bear witness to a sincere commitment: to make the invisible visible and to create connections through art.
Leila Alaoui's legacy remains more alive than ever today. Her singular perspective invites us to reflect on our shared humanity and serves as a powerful reminder of the essential role of photography in understanding the world.
